Kiisi, Nyamache Vocational Training Centre

Dear All

I last updated you at the end of Feb when plans were in place to develop a Training College in an area called Kissi. After all of our outstanding Boo Ball funds were finally collected a cheque was presented to Vision Africa to start work.

I was amazed 6 weeks later (18th April) to receive pictures sent via email of the first phase nearly complete - Africans work extremely hard.

Latest news is that we have received assistance from the Bournemouth Rotary Club for £10,000 to assist the Kiisi project.

Congratulation and thanks to everyone for their kind donations and continue support in keeping Boo's Spirit Alive.

Results so far - very exciting!!!!

Laying the foundations.....all the locals help.

This unit comprises 4 training rooms which will become the training college for 100 girls and eventually a further four rooms for 100 boys.

A local community group has been established and assisted the project, they will take full responsibility for the day-to-day running with an over site from Vision Africa our Partners. The entire area of Kissi has benefited from this project, through the creation of jobs, employment, excitement and hope for the future. The first 100 Girls selected will be from orphaned or destitute background, these girls have very little education and are extremely vulnerable to abuse and prostitution.

Our College will operate in the same way as the Seed of Hope which is on the outskirts of Nairobi City. This was set up by our Vision Africa partners (the Packard Family) some 3 years ago, for 30 girls.

Today it flourishes with 50 girls and every year they learn trade and life skills such as needlework, dress making, agriculture, cooking, Art decorations, computer skills and improve upon basic education. They also receive a good meal each day, plenty of clean water and most importantly receive love attention and emotional support.

Our plan is to complete this first phase with the inclusion of working toilets, services and a kitchen area. What we now need is sponsors for the 100 Girls.

Each girl will live within the local community. This is an emotionally a far better solution than the traditional orphanage environment. The girls will attend the college on a daily basis to learn life skills. Just like the Seed of Hope these skills will eventually turn into profitable self supporting business skills. Today the Seed of Hope makes many school uniforms for the local schools and generates a revenue, indeed they will make uniforms for our students.

The training college requires equipment and we will be collecting the following items for donation. Anyone with equipment should contact russell.hicks@higar.com. Vision Africa and Boo will jointly be sending a shipping container later this year loaded with useful stuff:

  • Sowing machines
  • Fabric
  • Computers
  • Books
  • Art & Craft equipment
  • Wood work equipment
  • Metal work equipment

For now we really need help to gain Sponsors for the Girls. As little as £5 per month covers basic needs. Full cost is £15 per month to cover food, clothes, medical and contribute to teaching costs. We really need your help. Click here to see how you can donate or sponsor a child.

Thanks again to all our UK and Kenyan supporters

Kind regards

Russell Hicks
